Vic / Tas Roller Derby Tournament 2013

So the Victorian/Tasmanian Roller Derby Tournament 2013 is in full throttle mode!

vic tas tournament

The Victorian Tasmanian Roller Derby tournament is an ambitious undertaking to have as many leagues as possible in both Victoria and Tasmania play in 2013, culminating in finals determining a champion league.

This is really really exciting news! The groupings have been announced and we have been placed in Group 2 alongside fellow Victorians Geelong Roller Derby League and Ballarat Roller Derby League and two Tasmanian leagues (both from Launceston) Van Dieman Rollers and Devil State Derby League.

We will be holding try outs in a few weeks time to rank our skaters that will form our Travel A team squad (the Death Stars) for the tournament this year. Within that top 20 skaters our Captains will be nominated and voted in and planning and training for this event will amp up TO THE EXTREME!

I am incredibly excited about this tournament this year. 16 leagues across these two states are getting involved. It fosters a greater derby relationship across all levels (regional leagues, experienced metro leagues, up-and-coming leagues) and more derby action for the fans out there.

Our team that will be formed for this has an exciting opportunity to put their skills to the test in our May the 4th bout with a visiting interstate league (details are being finalised… can’t mention any names just yet ;)) so that should give us something to really strive for to get our strategy and team work together before the Tournament starts towards the end of May

High-five to ALL OF THE DERBY!!!

2013 Bout Dates Woot Woot!

Our 2013 Bout Dates have been released. Put these dates in your calendar and come watch our home teams in action. I’m still drafted to the Pulp Vixens and am excited to see if we can continue our reign of purple domination 😉

Ooh and lookie here – I’m on the bout poster! (#801)

Birthday Haul

So my Birthday came and went. I extended the celebrations for as long as I could without it spilling over to some other baby jesus’ birthday shenanigans.

I had a fantastic week. I was taken out for a lovely dinner on Wednesday night at Kumo Izakaya on Lygon St. An Izakaya is to the Japanese what tapas is to the Spanish. It was amazing food! Also indulged in a sake flight: three 60ml samples of varying sake from dry to sweet. Enjoyed that immensely.

birthday adventures

On Thursday (my actual birthday) I took the day off work and took myself shopping. I kick started the morning with a coffee and custard brioche from Dulcita on Brunswick St, Fitzroy before I BOUGHT ALL OF THE SHOES!!!

Seriously. I really did. But what can you expect when Rubi Shoes has 50% off all sale stock! I scored 4 pairs for $45! #Winning!! I also bought a pair of Ah-Mazing boots from Wittner. They were my present from mum and dad… I bought the Axelle wedge sneaker, with it’s buckle and kickarse spikes, Urgh! I’m in love with this shoe!!

birthday gifts

That night I had Vixens training, our last one before our bout on the weekend (and last one for the year!). I got plenty of high-fives, they all sang happy birthday to me, I got 32 birthday hits from Spink! and rad presents from the wifey! (who doesn’t love a ninja lego necklace!?!).

Friday night I had a few friends over to continue my celebrating. I was given Dance Central 3 for Xbox 360 so after something to eat we some of us got our battle on, on the dance floor. It’s the funniest game to play, especially when some take it more seriously than others.

I also got plenty of derby-related presents too! I FINALLY got new plates for my boots. I was given the Riedell PowerDyne Reactor plates from the man (he had threaten to buy me a pair of Royal Doultan plates because I was taking too long decided which ones to get! hurr hurr he’s so funny :P). My sister got me a new Pro-tec classic helmet (I got it in white). The in-laws gave me Bont Jesa 608 Swiss Bearings which were on my Xmas list, so high-five to getting them early!! I also got a new whistle from Slay and Stax so I can blast it at coaching next year, and maybe try my hand at a bit of reffing (we’ll see!)

bday presents derby stuff

And of course Saturday was our Bout day (Yay to Vixens winning!!) and I kept the birthday celebrations going at the after party which we had at The Resurrection on Lygon St.

I spent the entirety of Sunday on the couch.

All in all, a massive birthday week. I am so grateful I have awesome friends I could celebrate with this year. I have an awesome family that spoils me rotten and a man that tolerates understands my need for new shiny derby gear! High five to that!

Vixens FTW!

Last night was our last bout for the year.  It was the last bout we’ll play under the current WFTDA ruleset and my team the Pulp Vixens took away with our second win!! Woot woot!

Pulp Vixens logo

It was a really hot day yesterday, it was 37 degrees when we got to the stadium *vomit* and just walking around and helping with bump-in I was sweating up a storm! This bout felt a little different leading in to it then the last. I think everyone’s head was just in it a bit more (from both sides). I knew the Sisters were going to come out strong this time and they sure did. It was a fiercely fought game.

The scores were close the entire time. We had a slight lead coming in to the second half, but the Sisters got back up and were winning at one point. We focussed a lot more with our walls and recycling to the front, successfully forcing a fast pack and switching our plays in to gear in the second half of the second half, ending the bout strong.

Final score was 131 v 91.

Highlights of the bout for me were:

  • We had some team goals set for this bout, and I really think we achieved them really well on the night! Especially holding that inside line like a bawws!
  • Having some great moments on the track with certain Sisters. Double winking with Donna Slay and telling Sin Amen Whip that I love her when we was lining up to jam for the Sisters.
  • Our Captains also asked us to set some personal goals for this bout. I wanted to concentrate on hitting a lot more, being a strong communicator on the track and holding back their jammer. I felt like I achieved that on the night, and really felt like I worked hard for my team.
  • Hitting Suzz Spender out whilst she was jammer, as I stayed in, then Donna Slay caught me off guard and hit me out too. It was an epic hit, it was really fricken Awesome! Well played Slay, well played.
  • Having a little moment in the second half where I may have lost my shit a little on the bench, so I physically turned my back to the track to have Zombattleli Screamatoma standing there. I told her I need her to pull me up if I do that, to make me calm down and refocus. To which she put that massive smile on her face and told me to calm down and go out there and hit some bitches! Thanks Nat, you were ace for me last night!! Vixens pride ourselves in keeping our Zen on the bench, we look to each other to help focus and calm down, and I love that that support is there.
  • Celebrating our win in the changerooms afterwards and having a dance off with Bliss Star (my wifey!!) to Gangnam Style!! Our Captain’s (Anna Conned Her) daughter, Mila, joined in too, it was the cutest!
  • Oh yeah, and getting MVP. Yeah. Woah! I was just talking to Miss Hellfire and Little Piece not 10 minutes before they announced MVPs for the game, discussing the fact that I’d never get MVP. I’m not a jammer, I just block. Blockers don’t get MVP. That’s my experience. That wasn’t me being negative about it all, just commenting on the fact that usually it’s given to an all rounder – someone that shines as a jammer/blocker, someone that’s consistent as both. Well that threw me when the Sisters gave it to me! Thanks ladies, I’m honoured and truly grateful for you noticing little ol’ me on the track getting all up in your biz 😉

What an epic end to our year!! That bout was fantastic to play and you ladies rock my World! Looking forward to our AGM and Christmas party next weekend and the well deserved break over the Summer!

High Five Vixens. High Five Sisters of Anarchy. High Five Northside Rollers!! Bring on 2013 I say!

The derby just keeps on giving!

Our last bout of the year is this weekend! Our 2 home teams (my team the Pulp Vixens and the Sisters of Anarchy) once again take on each other in our second home team bout “2 Hot to Handle”. You can still buy tickets online!!

2 Hot to Handle

It will be my first bout in a while where I am not a Captain on the day. I am hoping that I can relax a bit and enjoy playing the game more then previous. A few family and friends are coming to this one, which will be rad to have them in the crowd.

Also… I get to play with all these lovely ladies… look at them, don’t they look spesh!?!
